Citizen's Against the Maui County Farming Ban

Thousands of Maui County farmers, scientists and community members urge you to look into the facts carefully before you vote on the Farming Ban Initiative.

The Maui County Farming Ban is a harmful, deceptive and costly initiative that will appear on countywide election ballots this November.

This proposed law would place an immediate ban on many long-standing farming operations on Maui and Molokai, threatening to put over 600 people out of work. Without those incomes, folks would no longer be able to support local businesses, such as markets, gas stations and shops. That would create a huge ripple effect which would severely damage all aspects of the County economy, impacting farmers and non-farmers, alike.

It would force the County government to create a new, costly and unnecessary government bureaucracy to enforce its provisions when there are already well-qualified regulatory agencies on the state and federal level that are currently doing this same job.

The Farming Ban initiative would also subject farmers and even backyard gardeners to tens of thousands of dollars in fines and even jail time, just for growing certain kinds of papaya, corn and other crops.

And there is no absolutely no credible scientific basis for these additional regulations and restrictions.

The Maui County Farming Ban is bad for farming, bad for our economy and bad for our community.

Please look into the facts and join our citizens committee of thousands of local farmers, scientists, parents, organizations and local folks that oppose this harmful initiative.
